Did the PS Vita REALLY Disappoint Japanese Sales This Weekend?

The exact number, as Famitsu is reporting, is 321,407 units sold. And that "first week" actually only encompassed two days, December 17th and 18th. By contrast, when the original PSP launched seven years ago, Sony picked up 166,000 new users in the first day. Meaning Sony can pat themselves on the back for getting the Vita out there and Japanese gamers interested at launch.

Unfortunately the new gaming handheld from Sony fell just shy of the Nintendo 3DS's opening sales record which saw 371,000 units sold.

I really think its a big accomplishment. Many people are waiting to see is the Vita really worth it. I mean with all the smart phones and android tablets I honestly don't see how many people would actually need it. Sony really needs to offer more than just the "hardcore gaming" tag. A lot of people don't game heavy on the go. They have PS3's at home for that. I hope they change something by the US launch.
